Rumor has it that Apple’s next generation of iOS devices is slated to get a new processor: the A5. This processor would be approximately 4 times more powerful than the current A4 chip in iPhone 4. The processor would easily be capable of superior graphics, powering an iPad with a doubled resolution and even HD video with output through HDMI. The rumored A5 might just be the biggest new feature of the next iPad, iPhone and even AppleTV.
AppleInsider claims to have a reliable source for this A5 chip rumor, the same source that provided information about licensing deals from 2008 that helped create the A4. Their rumor states that the current chip has the SGX535 graphics and video core, but there’s a new SGX543 that effectively doubles the power at the same clock speed. Additionaly, it supports OpenCL, which offloads nongraphical computing tasks to the GPU for faster processing.
But what does this do for you? Doubling your graphics power is always a good thing. Since Apple products rely heavily on user interfaces looking nice, extra graphics power will make just about everything faster. Fonts will load faster, games will have higher frame rates, developers will be able to push the system harder,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and possibly most important of all, these devices may finally be able to support HD content natively. This would make having an HDMI output useful for more than just its single cable simplicity. But wait,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there’s more. Apple is rumored to be packing two of these sweet graphics chips on each A5, and that means 4 times the graphics power. Can I get a Tim the Tool Man Taylor “ruh ruh ruh?”
The rumor goes on to detail that Apple also intends to go multicore on the general computing side of things,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], specifically with an ARM Cortex-A9. Basically, it sounds like Apple is really going under the hood and pimping your next iOS device’s ride. You can expect the next generation of Apple devices to be even faster, have amazing graphic capabilities, support HD content, and possibly even support HDMI docks for outputting that content to an HDTV. These details alone would make for a worthy upgrade, so I’m excited to see how this pans out and what else Apple may have up their sleeve for iPad 2 and iPhone 5.
