Cookbooks not cutting it for you any more? If you’re anything like me, then recipes need to have pictures (at a bare minimum) to be interesting at all. But that’s not really enough, either; you need ratings of those recipes. This can’t be accomplished with a regular cookbookthe editors would likely be a bit biased in their recipe reviews since they wouldn’t have put them in the book if they didn’t like them in the first place. Allrecipes puts all of this in users’ hands. Users upload recipes, pictures and reviews. And now there’s an app to make this even easier to use on your iPad.
What is it?
The Allrecipes app is your virtual, searchable cookbook. It’s most useful for existing AllRecipes.com users, but it’s never to late to start using this great resource. AllRecipes is a huge database full of recipes complete with pictures, nutritional information and reviews. The only problem is that you likely have to print off any recipes you may be interested in trying. That’s where the app comes in. Just bring your iPad into the kitchen and you’re ready to go.
How does it work?
That depends on whether you upgrade to the Pro version via an in app purchase. Without it, you get access to three tabs: Inspire Me, Search and Featured. If you have a hard time making decisions but aren’t that picky, Inspire Me and Featured may be good places to start. Inspire Me throws images on the screen of food you may be interested in making. You can filter on a number of things, like ingredients, diets, course,

, occasion, even time to prepare. Featured is similar,

, but there are no filters. These are just recipes that have been well received. Search is where the real power is. You get a lot of the same filters from Inspire Me, plus you can search for specific dishes. Recipes are returned with pictures and ratings.
If you buy the Pro upgrade, you get to log in with your AllRecipes account, get extra filters for searching,

, gain access to your Recipe Box and List, and don’t have to deal with advertisements. The Recipe Box features is the useful since you can find good recipes on your computer then access them on your iPad instead of printing them. And it’s a lot more convenient than having to search for the same recipe again without the Pro upgrade, though I’m not sure this is all worth $5; it’s more like $2.
Recipes can be modified for number of servings, but that’s it. You can add the existing recipe to your Recipe Box, but you can’t actually modify a recipe and save it as your own. Not a big deal, but it would be useful to at least be able to make notes like you would on a printed recipe.
Is it contagious?
Absolutely. Allrecipes is a great utility for anyone who cooks. This app is basically a virtual cookbook. But it’s better than a regular cookbook because there are ratings and reviews from real people on each recipe. Most recipes have pictures, and it’s even easy to adjust measurements to increase or decrease the number of servings. It’s questionable whether the Pro upgrade is actually worth $5 since you really only get access to your Recipe Box. It would be easier to recommend the upgrade if this were a universal app, but it’s not, and there’s a separate upgrade for the iPhone version. You could accomplish most everything you need to have in the kitchen with just the regular iPad version, which is great since it’s free.
